What Is Cold Brew?
When you think of cold brew coffee, there’s a chance that you may just be thinking about a regular old iced coffee. But contrary to popular belief, that’s not quite the same thing.
Cold brew coffee is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: cold brew coffee is brewed with chilled or even room-temperature water, as opposed to the hot water of traditional brews, for an extended period of time. With this process, the time spent brewing the coffee actually takes the place of heat, which tends to expedite the traditional process.
Cold brews, then, are typically brewed for somewhere between 12 and 24 hours, depending on the type of coffee and desired flavors. The end result isn’t a fully made pot of coffee, but rather a full bodied coffee concentrate which is then mixed with water to make a cold brew.
The whole idea around cold brew coffee is that it eliminates some of the unpleasant tastes associated with steaming hot coffee; it’s often said that cold brew coffee contains around two-thirds less acid than its hot brewed counterparts.
Cold brew aficionados will tell you that their style brings all of the good parts about the coffee — caffeine boost, well-rounded flavor, and deliciousness — without the acidity and sometimes burnt flavor of hot coffee. Those unpleasant flavors are often some of the largest complaints with traditional iced coffee, which is usually just regularly brewed coffee which is cooled down and poured over ice.
Cold brew coffee is making a serious sweep around the world, and even the big gourmet coffee chains like Starbucks have caught on to the trend in recent years.
Is Cold Brew Always Cold?
Not necessarily! While cold brew coffee is usually enjoyed just that way — mixed with cold water and served over ice — it can also be enjoyed hot.
Those who prefer hot coffee but are interested in trying out the cold brew process to eliminate some of the acidity and get a more mellow flavor can take their cold brew concentrate and instead mix in a one-to-one ratio of hot water.
How Do I Keep My Cold Brew Cold?
Aside from keeping your hot coffee hot, keeping your cold coffee cold is one of the biggest problems that is faced by coffee drinkers around the world.
